SAVE OUR HIGH STREETS: A RADICAL BLUEPRINT FOR REVIVAL


Britain’s high streets are dying. Decades of neglect, unfair taxation, and stifling bureaucracy have left our town centres littered with empty shops, graffiti, and a sense of decay. Tinkering around the edges won’t fix this—we need **total, decisive change**.  

Here’s my plan to **rescue, restore, and reinvent** our high streets—with one bold addition: **a national online tax to fund their revival**.  

### **1. CLEAN UP & TAKE PRIDE**  
- **Zero tolerance** on filth: hike littering fines, crack down on graffiti (use community service teams), and **name-and-shame** the dirtiest councils.  
- **More bins, emptied regularly**—basic stuff, yet so many councils fail.  
- **Compulsory purchase derelict buildings**—no more eyesores dragging the street down.  

### **2. TAX JUSTICE FOR SMALL BUSINESSES**  
- **Scrap business rates** for independent shops—shift the burden to **online giants** with a new **High Street Revival Tax** (more below).  
- **Three-year tax holiday** for new small businesses.  
- **Double the VAT threshold**—stop punishing success.  
- **Slash beer duty & VAT for pubs**—they’re community hubs, not cash cows for HMRC.  

### **3. PARKING & ACCESS**  
- **Free short-stay parking** to bring back footfall.  
- **Abolish rip-off charges** that push shoppers to out-of-town retail parks.  
- **Discount public transport**—get people into town centres, not just past them.  

### **4. SLASH RED TAPE**  
- **Fast-track outdoor seating**—let cafés and pubs spill onto pavements.  
- **Simplify licensing & planning**—stop treating businesses like criminals.  
- **Health & safety reform**—common sense, not clipboard tyranny.  

### **5. RESTORE LAW & ORDER**  
- **More police in town centres**—**zero tolerance** on shoplifting, aggressive begging, and street drinking.  
- **Deport illegal migrants** (no more fake "street performers" exploiting lax enforcement).  
- **Licence street musicians properly**—culture, not chaos.  

### **6. EMPOWER COMMUNITIES**  
- **Fly the flag!** Celebrate British culture with bunting, heritage restoration, and veteran-led business grants.  
- **Pupil clean-up squads**—instill pride early.  
- **National "Best High Street" competition**—reward innovation.  

### **🔥 THE GAME-CHANGER: A NATIONAL ONLINE TAX FOR HIGH STREETS 🔥**  
Big tech and online retailers have boomed while our high streets withered. It’s time they paid back.  
- **A 1-2% levy on large online sales**, ring-fenced **exclusively** for high street regeneration.  
- **Funds go direct to councils** for:  
  - **Shopfront repairs & heritage restoration**  
  - **Small business grants & apprenticeships**  
  - **Clean teams & security**  
- **Full transparency**—every penny publicly tracked.  

### **THIS ISN’T JUST ABOUT SHOPS—IT’S ABOUT BRITAIN’S FUTURE**  
High streets should be the heart of communities—not decaying relics. Yes, this will cost upfront, but the **economic boost will repay it tenfold**.  

**If we keep doing what we’ve always done, we’ll keep getting what we’ve always got.** It’s time for radical action.
